Theres nothing like an opening to bring people together and this event was no exception. With a fire installation at the entrance and a large appreciative gathering of artists, friends and visitors to keep the gallery warm all night. Reknowned sculptor John Van der Kolk attended to present the Sculpture Prize. A small selection of photos follows to give an insight into proceedings!

Macksville Primary School Visits the gallery

Bowraville Art Gallery welcomed their first school excursion visit to the gallery of 55 school children from Macksville Primary on March 18th. In these photos the children are discussing the artistic qualities of Natalie Bateman’s work as well as lining up to put their comments in the visitor’s book.

Natalie Bateman & Friends ~ Opening

Bowraville Art Gallery opened its third exhibition ‘Natalie Bateman & Friends’ on Friday March 7th. Approximately 70 guests attended the opening night and were treated to a diverse array of 60 creative artworks chosen by the artists. Aunty Jessie Williams was unable to attend the opening but her written welcome and opening words were warmly read by Uncle Robin Bryant who delivered an eloquent Welcome to Country as well as words on the importance of art for communities.

Natalie Bateman, Uncle Martin Ballangarry, Keene Ballangarry, Francine Edwards, Lorraine Edwards & Conway Marshall presented paintings in the exhibition, highlighting different styles with the theme of the sea and rivers dominating. Natalie’s highly textured trademark dot work powerfully evoked sensations to scenes for viewers.

Other works including a ‘Picassoesque’ artwork by Lorraine Edwards were admired and enjoyed by all at the opening. Francine Edwards also presented stunning ceramics to the show and easy to understand why some ‘bigname’ organisations are interested in courting her exquisite designs. Photography by Chels Marshall tied the exhibition together through her water, environment & children themes, naturally and beautifully documented in both black & white and colour photographs. As a guest at the opening said “This show is a breath of fresh energy”

Wood Deco Fine Prints & Framing - now an integral
part of the Bowraville Art Gallery

Also launched on Friday evening was Wood deco Fine Prints & Framing to the Bowraville Gallery space. Lesley & Ingo have done a superb job in creating this additional service and outlet to the gallery space and guests commented on how the Bowraville Art Gallery is becoming a one stop shop for artists and art lovers alike with something for everyone. Natalie Bateman & Friends exhibition is open until April 17th. The Bowraville Art Gallery will also open on Easter Friday, Saturday & Monday.

Sorry Day in Bowraville

Wednesday February 13, 2008 Bowraville Art Gallery hosted Sorry Day celebrations with over 80 people witnessing the historic broadcast made by the Federal Government and delivered by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

The community participated in a peaceful procession and gathered to hear and share stories from Bowraville Elders including Sandra Buchanan, Martin Ballangarry and others about the stolen generations, and the significance of this historic day.

It was an emotional but happy day for many with music, dance and commentary from participants.

emerge ~ opening night

The EMERGE exhibition opened on Friday February 8th at the Bowraville Art Gallery. Seventy guests attended the opening with Councillor Martin Ballangarry opening the exhibition with a welcome to country.

Guests were treated to music and songs performed by Martin’s son, Keene Ballangarry and then followed by traditional dance performed by Victor Chapman and directed by Martin with clap sticks.

The EMERGE exhibition showcases the artwork of Bowraville Indigenous artists with almost 100 works including paintings, recycled furniture, textiles, clap sticks boomerangs and other artifacts.

EMERGE aims to show the diverse styles and stories across a broad age range of Bowraville artists in time for the Federal Government’s historic apology to the ‘Stolen Generations’.

On this historic occasion on Wednesday February 13th, the Bowraville Art Gallery plays host to the local indigenous community, participating in a peaceful walk of High Street, the main street of Bowraville, to commemorate the apology.

The walk will culminate at the gallery to view the EMERGE artist’s work and celebrate the long awaited apology.

All are welcome to join us for this event and we look forward to seeing you at the gallery.

Welcome to the Bowraville Art Gallery blog, a place where you can view some of the works currently or previously exhibited.

We plan to have a regular newsletter of exhibition happenings and other events of interest and welcome your comments.

Elements - Opening Night

Elements was chosen as the exhibition title for the re-opening of the Bowraville Art Gallery featuring works by Alexandra Byrne and Tony Allison.

Opened by Arts Mid North Coast CEO Richard Holloway, guests were treated to sculptural works, digital prints and light-based installations. Sumptuous nibbles and refreshments ensured all were encouraged to socialise while enjoying the revamped space and the art therein.
